The Pre-Collegiate Program of Yangon
A U.S-Based Organization Established In 2003
Creating Agents of Change in Myanmar
About Our Pre-Collegiate
The Pre-Collegiate Program (PCP) of Yangon was founded in 2003 to develop critical reasoning, civic engagement, and understanding of the diverse communities within Myanmar among a cohort of Myanmar youth as they prepare to attend colleges abroad.
Core Values:
A Liberal Arts Education
Students at PCP are required to take a wide variety of courses, including English composition, creative writing, psychological science, environmental science, gender studies, religious studies, history, and more. A liberal arts education explores issues, ideas, and methods across the humanities, the arts, and the natural and social sciences. Students will learn to read critically, write succinctly and think profoundly. These skills will enhance PCP students to have interesting conversations in and outside the classroom. It will strengthen their social and cultural analysis as they navigate the world’s most complex issues.
Community Engagement
Students at PCP act as an agency of change, working collaboratively with the community to positively impact a social issue or for the public good. Students are expected to engage in civic engagement activities and describe what they learn about themselves and their commitment to public action in the process.
Critical Thinking
At PCP we teach students how to evaluate and apply diverse perspectives to complex subjects within natural and human systems in the face of even conflicting positions. We encourage students to ask the right questions by examining evidence and factors for their conclusions, underlying reasons, assumptions, and potential fallacies.
Diversity and Inclusion
PCP recruits and admits minoritized students from different divisions and states all over Myanmar. Students are encouraged to demonstrate adjustment of their own attitudes and beliefs after working within and learning from the diversity of global communities and cultures.
Leadership
Students are encouraged to demonstrate initiative and apply reflective insights in the classroom discussions and in the multiple and complex civic engagement activities. Students run for class president to lead fellow classmates by representing their voices and advocating for them.
STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS& ACADEMIC MARKS
The Pre-Collegiate Program uses an unweighted four-point grading scale to evaluate student work in academic courses. All scores from public school and IGCSE exams are interpolated into a four-point scale.
SAT Verbal | SAT Math | SAT Writing |
---|---|---|
543 | 645 | 14 |
Average GPA YTD: 3.52 | Average Duolingo Score: 130
Our courses are 10 weeks long:
This integrated program is composed of four terms of honors level academic courses. All are conducted in a seminar format and include field trips. The curriculum integrates mathematics into the social science and natural science courses. The reason for the modest place of science in the curriculum is because the entrants have followed the science stream in ninth and tenth grades. After the academic terms, the students take a four-month, full-time internship, guided by a weekly seminar. The Program is equivalent to eleventh and twelfth grades. A Certificate in Liberal Arts is awarded upon completion of the Program.
