Student Life
The Pre-Collegiate Program was created to provide bright young adults with an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect in new and vital ways. The Program brings to students ideas, people, and experiences that teach them to think about and appreciate the capabilities of the human heart and intellect within Myanmar and in the world at large. Surrounded by a group of like-minded peers and supported by committed staff and faculty, the students make personal connections with each other often become life-long bonds.
The classes, speakers, service, and internships of the Program are all geared towards facilitating this development. Students should expect to work very hard and know that they are surrounded by a group of people who are doing the same. This work may mean they will have to re-manage or even sacrifice time they currently spend in other pursuits. The faculty do their best in helping students learn to balance dual commitments of school and home.
In addition to opportunities provided by the Program, students are encouraged to take initiative in finding ways to learn about and help the communities around them. At weekly community meetings, all students, faculty and staff will deliberate on what opportunities to welcome and evaluate the success of such endeavors.

Real Life Examples of how Our Program Transformed Students
Being the only son in the family, William’s family raised him to be a good student from a young age. William passed the matriculation examination with 6 distinctions. Though it was quite a shift from the traditional education system for William, he did remarkably well at our Program and never failed to take initiative during class discussions. Outside of academics, William loves to mingle with his classmates. William also excelled at his 4-month internship at Proximity Designs, a social business designed to help rural Myanmar families with farming technologies and finance. If we were to describe him in 3 words, William is compassionate, intellectual, and caring to the people around him. We admire William for being a well-rounded individual. William reaped what he sowed, and got a 100% scholarship to Carleton College in the U.S.
Nann is the eldest of her 3 siblings. Her parents are really supportive of her education and tried their best to financially support her to attend PCP. However, getting an American education seemed so far away for them. Even though Nann did really well at our Program, circumstances were not favorable for her. She. had to take 2 gap years before getting a full-scholarship to Centre College in the U.S. During her gap years, Nann had never stopped looking for opportunities to contribute back to her society by doing a full-time internship at an organization that fights for animal rights and illegal wildlife trade. Her hard work finally paid off. The other 2 siblings of her also ended up attending our Program and got enough scholarships to attend colleges abroad.
Paul is a Karen ethnic minority, and his parents are not well-informed with colleges outside of Myanmar. Like many other students in Myanmar, Paul did not know what kind of opportunities were out there. After his matriculation exam, he attended English language classes available in his hometown and got to know about our Program. Paul is very driven and open-minded. He realized early in his months of attending our Program that Asian schools are best-suited for him. Paul is now studying Computer Science at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.
Anna is raised by a single father. The family has little to no resources to study abroad. Yet, Anna is so determined and will do what it takes to get a world-class education even if she needs to read 50 pages or more a week at our Program. She was always on top of her assignments and college application processes. Anna is now studying a liberal arts education at Ashoka University in India.
Sean is the youngest of all male siblings. His two elder siblings are medical doctors. Though he is the youngest son of the family, he still carries a lot of responsibility and pressure. He was expected to follow the footsteps of his dad and his brothers. He did not get into the medical university and attended a government technological college instead. He then failed his first year of college, consequently he was labeled as a “failure”. Sean is an art enthusiast, so he visited art fairs and networking events in downtown Yangon. There Sean found out about the Pre-Collegiate Program of Yangon from one of its alumni. It was a struggle for Sean to go against his father, who wanted him to be an engineer. But Sean was so determined and resilient that he did not let go of an opportunity to change his life into the one he wants. Sean studied Communication Design at King Mongkut University in Thailand and also got a high paying job at his university.
